Frequently Asked Questions

What is a FENSA approved installer?

FENSA otherwise known as The Fenestration Self-Assessment Scheme, monitors building regulation compliance for windows and doors. Every FENSA registered installer are re-assessed regularly to ensure consistency of Building Regulations adherence. Following your installation, you will receive your FENSA certificate directly and this is normally within 4-6 weeks. It’s very important to keep this safe, as will be needed if you ever decide to sell your home. The certificate ownership is transferable and can be used by the new homeowner.

Please note- any doors with less than 50% glazing do not qualify for a certificate. All details will be provided on individual installations.

A’ Rated Glazing – what does it mean?

It’s the most efficient type of double glazing and the rating system is measured from A-G. A’ being the best and G’ being the worst (this is normally because its faulty or broken.)

The benefits of A Rated Glazing help reduce your energy costs (prevention of heat escaping.) Helps with improving air tightness and achieving a higher EPC rating.

I’m looking for a new door replacement, will this include a new frame as well?

Yes. Our door quotations will always include a new frame, cill and threshold as standard.

What is a composite door?

Most composite doors on the market are made from a GRP outer skin (glass reinforced plastic) this gives the ‘woodgrain’ effect that will see on most composite doors. As there is a vast market for these doors, what is used for the inner core will differ.

Our composite doors we offer are double rebated (68mm thickness) Polyurethane foam is used for the inner core along with steel reinforcement within the frame & door slab.

Acoustic Glazing & Triple Glazing – what is the difference?

Acoustic glazing has a transparent laminated layer which aids with noise reduction, UV reduction and improves your energy efficiency. The invisible coating is designed to keep your home cooler in the summer and warmer during the winter. It is a cost effective alternative which has a slightly lower U Value compared to double glazing.

Triple glazing will achieve your lowest U Value rating, however this is the most expensive option. It is made up of three panes of glass, so therefore is a thicker profile. Something to consider if you’re looking for a slimline appearance.

What is a U Value?

Also known as thermal transmittance – the rate of transfer of heat through a structure. This is calculated by how much energy is transmitted through the material and the lower the U Value indicates better insulation.

Is there any maintenance required for Timber Alternative Windows & Doors?

There’s no painting, sanding or general upkeep like with timber products! Our timber alternative products are from Evolution. Their unique selling point is they offer a Timber Look Joint where other products on the market are unable to, also a 190mm Deep Midrail on their doors. Offering these specific details really are popular when it comes to finding a product to replicate timber. Whether it’s because you want to replicate the existing style of your property and to create a whole new look entirely.

What is the difference between Georgian Grille Bars and Astragal Bars?

Georgian Grille Bars are internal bars, meaning they are within the double glazed unit. They come in 18mm & 25mm bar thickness and can be configured as a single bar or as a grid.

Astragal bars are external bars, so they sit on the outside of the glass unit (this is both externally & internally). They are normally around 20mm bar thickness but there are some wider options available dependent on the product. Again can be configured uniquely for the bar layout, just the same as Georgian Grille Bars.

Why can I see condensation on the outside of my window?

Outdoor condensation can form on the surface of the glass when its temperature drops below the outdoor dew point temperature. This isn’t a defect in the unit as the glass is keeping the heat inside the rooms of your house which is a positive indication that your windows are thermally efficient and reducing heat loss.
